Toast online ordering alternative for restaurants that want their own app

Nomback is a Toast online ordering alternative that doesn't need a Toast POS. Toast charges no commission but sells online ordering as an add-on of about $75 a month, with card processing reviewers put near 3.5% + 15 cents. Nomback is $99 a month for your own branded app with ordering, a stamp card and push deals.

How it works

  1. Tell us your menu and the reward you want, and we build your app in about two weeks.
  2. Orders go to a tablet or kitchen printer, so it runs next to whatever POS you have.
  3. Customers order and pay in your app and earn stamps; you send push deals when the kitchen is quiet.

A $30 order, both ways

On a $30 online order, Toast's reported 3.5% + 15¢ is $1.20 in processing. Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ is $1.17. Per order it's a wash. The difference is what each monthly fee buys: on Toast, an ordering page tied to your Toast POS; on Nomback, your own app with the stamp card and push channel built in.

If you are already on Toast and happy with it, Toast's ordering is the natural add-on. If you're not on Toast, buying a POS to get online ordering is the expensive way round.

The 99 cent fee episode

In June 2023 Toast added a 99 cent fee to guests' online orders under $15 and removed it the next month after owners pushed back (Restaurant Dive, Toast). It's a reminder to read who pays what. Nomback adds no fee to your customer's order.

Questions owners ask

Does Toast charge commission on online orders?

No. Toast charges a monthly fee for online ordering and card processing on each order, but no percentage commission.

Can I use Nomback if I have a Toast POS?

Yes. Nomback orders come to a tablet or kitchen printer, so they don't need to go through Toast. There is no Toast integration, so you'd ring app orders on the tablet.

How much does Toast online ordering cost?

Reviewers put it around $75 a month on top of the POS plan, plus processing near 3.5% + 15 cents on online orders. Toast doesn't print its processing rates.

Is a Toast branded app the same as Nomback?

Both put your name in the App Store. Toast's requires the Toast POS and is sold separately; Nomback's $99 includes the app, ordering, stamp card and push notifications.

Does Nomback offer delivery like Toast Delivery Services?

You can deliver with your own drivers now. DoorDash Drive delivery is coming soon.

What does Nomback cost all in?

$99 a month and $399 setup, no commission. You also pay Apple $99 a year, Google $25 once, and Stripe card processing.
