How to get off DoorDash without losing your customers

To get off DoorDash without losing sales, move your regulars first and leave last. Put a QR card in every DoorDash bag offering a free item in your own app, reward direct orders with stamps, and point your Google and website order links to your app. When most repeat orders come direct, drop to DoorDash's 15% Basic plan or leave.

How it works

  1. Launch your own ordering app and a first-order reward, like Anthony's free slice.
  2. Put a QR card in every DoorDash bag and change your Google ordering link to your app.
  3. Watch direct orders for 60 to 90 days, then downgrade or deactivate DoorDash.

What it costs

Nomback planMonthlyOne-time setup
Your own ordering and rewards app (iPhone and Android)$99$399
App and website$129$399
Website only$79$149

No commission on any order and no fee added to your customers. Card payments go through Stripe at 2.9% + 30¢. Apple charges $99 a year and Google $25 once for the developer accounts, which are in your name. Month to month, and live in about two weeks. Full pricing.

Why not just quit tomorrow

DoorDash is where new customers find you, and people who like you on DoorDash will often order direct if you give them a reason. Quit cold and you lose both groups. The point of the plan is to keep the discovery and stop paying 15% to 30% on people who already know you (DoorDash pricing).

Direct ordering isn't a hard sell. In a DoorDash survey of 1,504 consumers, 38% preferred ordering delivery directly from the restaurant's site or app versus 37% through third-party apps (Restaurant Business).

The 90-day plan

WhenDo this
Week 0Launch your app. Pick a first-order reward that costs you little: a slice, a drink, an egg roll.
Week 1Bag card in every DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub order. Same card on the counter.
Week 1Set your own ordering link as preferred on your Google Business Profile, and remove the delivery app links you can.
Weeks 2 to 8Stamp card on every app order. A push deal on your slowest night each week.
Week 8 to 12Compare: how many app orders a week, and how many DoorDash orders are repeat customers.
AfterDrop to DoorDash Basic (15%), or deactivate if direct orders cover it.

Google says you can mark your own ordering link as preferred for pickup and delivery (Google Business Profile Help).

What it saves

Each regular you move saves the commission on every order they make. A regular who orders a $30 meal every week costs you $9 a time at 30%, which is $468 a year. Ten regulars is $4,680 a year, against $1,188 a year for a Nomback app.

How to actually leave DoorDash

DoorDash removes a store through Merchant Support. Its help center says permanent deactivations take 24 to 48 hours to process (DoorDash Help). If you're in California, apps can't list your restaurant without your written consent under the state's Fair Food Delivery Act (Restaurant Business). Our removal guide covers Grubhub and Uber Eats too.

Questions owners ask

Can I get my customers off DoorDash?

Yes, the repeat ones. Give them a reason to order direct, like a free item in your app on their first order and stamps after that, and tell them in every bag.

Is it against DoorDash rules to put cards in bags?

DoorDash's terms change, so read your merchant agreement. Owners commonly include their own menus and cards in orders.

Should I raise my DoorDash prices?

Many owners price DoorDash higher to cover commission. Keep in-app prices at your menu price so ordering direct is the better deal.

How long does it take to move regulars?

Plan on 60 to 90 days of bag cards and app rewards before judging it.

How do I remove my restaurant from DoorDash?

Contact DoorDash Merchant Support and ask to deactivate. DoorDash's help center says it takes 24 to 48 hours.

What does my own app cost?

Nomback is $99 a month and $399 setup, with no commission.
