A commission-free ordering app for restaurants on Clover
Nomback gives a restaurant on Clover its own iPhone and Android ordering app, with no commission, and every app order shows up on the Clover POS like any other order. The owner connects it by logging into Clover and tapping Approve, which takes about 30 seconds. From then on, an order placed in the app appears on the Clover as a "Nomback Online" order, already marked paid, with the customer's name, phone number, pickup or delivery, and ready time in the order note, and it fires to the order printer. The app is $99 a month and $399 to set up. There is no per-order fee, no extra tablet, and nothing to retype.
How the Clover connection works
Clover publishes an API that lets an approved app read a merchant's menu and create orders on their account. Nomback is one of those apps. When an owner connects, Clover hands Nomback a key that only works for that one restaurant and only for the things the owner approved: reading the menu, creating orders, recording payments and printing. The owner can see the app under Apps in their Clover dashboard and remove it there any time.
Nothing is installed on the Clover hardware. The connection lives between Nomback's servers and Clover's servers, so it works with a Station, Mini, Flex, or a Clover Duo, and it keeps working if the restaurant swaps devices.
Connecting takes three taps
- Open the link Nomback sends you. It opens Clover's own login page. Nomback never sees your Clover password.
- Tap Connect, then Connect again. Clover shows you the app, that it's free, and the permissions it uses.
- Land on nomback.com/clover and see "Connected". That's it. Nomback creates a "Nomback" payment type and a "Nomback Online" order type in your Clover so app orders are easy to spot and report on.
Then we pull your menu from Clover. Items, prices, categories and modifiers come across, so nobody types the menu twice. Items with a market price or sold by weight are flagged for you to price by hand.
What an app order looks like on your Clover
Here is a real test order from the Clover sandbox, exactly as it appeared on the Orders screen:
Each item is its own line, with the customer's note on it. Modifiers come through as Clover modifiers when the item is linked to your Clover inventory, or folded into the item name when it isn't. The payment is recorded under the Nomback tender with the tip and tax split out, so your end-of-day report shows app sales on their own line instead of mixed into cash or card.
Who processes the card
There are two ways to run it, and the owner picks.
| Standard | Pay through your Clover | |
|---|---|---|
| Card is charged by | Stripe, in the app. About 2.9% + 30¢. | Your Clover merchant account, at your Clover rate. |
| Money lands in | Your bank, from Stripe, 2 days. | Your bank, with the rest of your Clover sales. |
| Shows on your Clover as | "Nomback" tender, already paid. | "Nomback" tender, already paid. |
| Setup | Nothing extra. | Online payments turned on in your Clover account, and one webhook link added in the Clover dashboard. About 10 minutes. |
Paying through your Clover uses Clover's Hosted Checkout, so the card form is Clover's own page and card numbers never touch Nomback. If a payment processor or reseller set up your Clover, this option keeps your processing with them.
What happens when something goes wrong
If Clover is slow or unreachable for a moment, Nomback keeps the order and retries. An order is never sent twice: if the connection drops halfway, the next attempt picks up where it stopped instead of creating a second order. If the printer is off, the order still shows on the POS. If an owner removes the app in Clover, Nomback marks that restaurant as needing to reconnect and tells us, and orders keep coming into the app in the meantime.
Clover's access keys expire every 30 minutes and are refreshed automatically. If Clover's sandbox or servers rate-limit a burst of orders, Nomback backs off and tries again a few seconds later.
What it costs compared with ordering on the apps
Nomback is $99 a month and $399 to set up, with no commission (every fee here). On a $40 order, DoorDash's most common plan keeps $10 and Uber Eats' keeps $10 (all plans compared). A restaurant doing $8,000 a month through the apps at 25% pays about $2,000 a month in commission. Restaurants usually clear 3% to 5% profit (Toast), so moving regulars to your own app is worth more than most menu changes.
Clover also sells its own online ordering page. It is a website, not an app, and it has no stamp card or push notifications. Nomback's app is where the rewards live, so your regulars have a reason to come back to it, and it is what shows up with your name on their phone.
Clover FAQ
Do I need to retype my menu? No. It comes from your Clover. Change a price in Clover and tell us, and the app updates.
Does it work with my kitchen printer? Yes. Orders fire to the order printer set up on your Clover. No printer, the order still shows on the screen.
Can my staff see app orders separately? Yes. They come in as the "Nomback Online" order type with "PAID ONLINE" at the top of the note, and your reports can filter by the Nomback tender.
Can I disconnect? Yes, from Apps in your Clover dashboard, or by emailing us. Orders go back to the tablet and email until you reconnect.
Does Nomback see my card data or passwords? No. Clover gives Nomback a limited key for your account. Card numbers go to Stripe or to Clover's own checkout page, never to Nomback.
Is the app a real app? Yes. It is listed on the App Store and Google Play under your restaurant's name. See Anthony's Pizzeria Rewards, a live one.
For payment processors and Clover resellers
If you set up Clover for restaurants, Nomback is an easy add. Your restaurant gets a branded app with no commission, the orders land on the Clover you sold them, and with the pay-through-Clover option the processing stays yours. Partners are paid up to $300 per app that goes live. Details on the partner page.
